In support of strong growth across all areas of the business SMX has made strategic new appointments in product development and business development, and welcomed a new Director to its Board.

Brendon Petrich – a former Director on the SMX Board – has been appointed to the new position of SMX Product Owner, responsible for the SMX product roadmap.

Rod Snodgrass – a former CEO of Spark Ventures – joins the Board, replacing Brendon Petrich.

David Frazer has been appointed to the new position of Vice President of Business Development, responsible for international sales of the new SMX new Managed Messaging solution now powering Spark’s Xtra mail service, as well as marketing development for our full product suite in Australia. David brings a wealth of international experience to our business development team.

John Hill has been appointed as a Business Development Manager, focussed on working with large commercial and Government opportunities, as well as supporting our resellers.

Our Managed Messaging solution for Spark is attracting international interest. This huge development project culminated in the migration of more than 800,000 Xtra mail customers off Yahoo and onto the new SMX platform. It was the first bulk migration off Yahoo worldwide and was completed on time and on budget. The IP developed as part of the SMX Managed Messaging service for Spark is owned by SMX and presents a major opportunity to leverage this for future business opportunities. The IP is also being used to develop SMX’s Secure Email Gateway (SEG) platforms in NZ and AU.

Brendon Petrich – Product Owner

After six years as a Director on the SMX Board, in April 2017 Brendon stepped down from his Director role to take up the newly created and highly strategic position of Product Owner. SMX’s products and IP now span sophisticated email security applications, including content management and archiving, and hosted email.  Brendon is responsible for the strategic definition and delivery of the SMX product roadmap. He also has a hands-on customer-facing role in terms of explaining the roadmap and capturing requirements.

Brendon has a background in software development and delivery, commercial management, business development and management in New Zealand and Australia. He is experienced in product development and delivery, strategic planning, financial management, commercial assessments, acquisitions, supply chain and procurement, and production management.  Brendon joined SMX from vWorkApp, a Mobile Workforce Management Software development company that he co-founded, where he held the dual roles of CEO and Product Manager. Prior to this Brendon worked for Omnilab Media Group, an Australasian media company, where he held the dual roles of Group Commercial Manager in Australia and General Manager for Omnilab NZ; Commercial Manager – Sales and Marketing at Air New Zealand; New Business Manager – Business Development at Television New Zealand; and as a Logistics Officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Brendon holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Graduate Diploma in Business from the University of Auckland, and a Graduate Diploma of Public Sector Management from Massey University. He is also a graduate of the Senior Executive Supply Chain and Logistics Development Programme at Monash University, Melbourne.

Rod Snodgrass, Director - SMX Board
Rod Snodgrass – Director, SMX Board

In April 2017, we welcomed Rod Snodgrass to the SMX Board, replacing Brendon Petrich. Rod is an experienced director and is a current and past member of numerous Boards both in New Zealand and globally. Rod has 20+ years of professional experience in the ICT, telecommunications and media industries. As the former CEO of Spark Ventures, Rod brings valuable expertise to SMX as we look to invest for growth in the business.

Rod has significant experience in corporate strategy, innovation, digital growth, transformation and disruption in New Zealand. He demonstrates a proven track record in building and executing corporate, market, business and product shaping and building strategies in the telco, media, internet and digital sectors. He is an AUT and Flux Accelerator mentor and also a start-up investor.

Rod is a New Zealand and Australian Chartered Accountant and a member of NZ Institute of Directors.

David Frazer, SMX VP of Business Development
David Frazer – Vice President of Business Development

David Frazer joined SMX in February 2017 as Vice President of Business Development. In this role, David’s specific focus is on new business opportunities for SMX in the Australian, North American and other international markets. David brings a wealth of experience to SMX. He has built his 25+ year career in IT working in Europe, the United States and New Zealand, and has held senior leadership roles for the last fifteen years. David’s specialties are in leading teams and company growth in Internet Security, eHealth and IT applications strategies through Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). He has been responsible for developing and delivering many highly complex commercial software solutions in both local and global environments. 

David started his career in the UK before moving to New Zealand for a technical management role with accounting software provider Solution 6. He followed that up with a role at consultancy company TechTonics, before moving to F-Secure, the global provider of SaaS for Internet Security and User Generated Content Applications, where he became Regional Vice-President, Technology based in Silicon Valley.

John Hill, SMX Business Development Manager
John Hill – Business Development Manager

John Hill joined SMX in May 2017 in a Business Development Manager role. With a strong track record in sales and significant experience working with government organisations, John’s core focus at SMX is on business opportunities in the local market, and particularly the government sector. Originally from the UK, John arrived in New Zealand in the 1980s for a working holiday, and decided to stay. A desire for a career change saw John make the leap into sales. He started off selling printing presses until an opportunity to move into a sales role at Telecom NZ proved too good to refuse.

Over the last 25+ years, John has built up a strong sales and marketing management track record in the telecommunications and ICT industries working for industry-leading organisations including Telecom NZ and Gen-i (Spark), Telstra, Ericsson, Zintel, Huawei Technologies, and most recently Vocus Communications.
