Ian McDonald

Ian McDonald

Ian McDonald was appointed to the CEO role in September 2013. Ian moved to New Zealand from Scotland in 2004, where he was a founder of Connect Scotland and Global Connect. There he created and managed the Connect Investment Conference to be one of Europe’s most successful venture capital investment conferences. Connect Scotland and Global Connect have been internationally influential in bringing together investors, technology start-ups and management expertise. Recent experience and achievements in New Zealand include helping to grow online registry company Foster Moore into a world leader in registry applications. A range of corporate development consulting assignments have helped define, validate and execute market development strategies for New Zealand technology companies looking to grow in European, North American and Asian markets.

Colin Print

Chief Financial Officer
Colin Print

Colin Print joined SMX in May 2016 as Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Prior to joining SMX, he was the Chief Financial Officer at UXC Oxygen Limited. In his role as SMX CFO, Colin is responsible for leading and managing SMX’s Finance and Commercial team. Colin ensures the financial and commercial integrity of SMX's business. He is a professional, results driven senior financial executive with more than 25 years of progressive experience in finance and operations management within multinational, trans-Tasman and New Zealand owned companies and has more than 20 years of experience in the IT industry. Colin brings a valuable mix of strategic and technical financial and commercial skills to SMX. Colin has worked in both senior financial and contract management roles for tech companies including Alcatel, EDS, and UXC.

Karen Liesenfeld

Chief Operations Officer
Karen Liesenfeld

Karen Liesenfeld joined SMX in May 2015 as Operations Manager and was appointed to the position of Chief Operations Officer in January 2016. Prior to joining SMX, she was Platform Operations Manager at Touchpoint Group. In her role as SMX COO, Karen is responsible for leading and managing SMX’s technical teams spanning support, development, operations and integration. She ensures the availability of SMX's cloud services across all sites and that SMX delivers consistently excellent service and support quality for its customers. Karen is an experienced platform operations and infrastructure manager who has more than 15 years of experience in the IT industry. Strategic, inventive, creative and resourceful, Karen brings a valuable mix of management and technical operations skills to SMX and a deep understanding of how to build relationships that create strong bridges between people, processes and technology. She thrives on challenges and has a passion for innovation, change and people management. Originally from Germany, where she spent 10 years working as an environmental engineer before taking the leap into IT, Karen immigrated to New Zealand in 2005. Karen has owned a web and internet design company in Germany, and worked in both technical and management roles for New Zealand tech companies including Gen-i, Telecom and Touchpoint Group.

Brendon Petrich

Product Owner
Brendon Petrich

After six years as a Director on the SMX Board, in April 2017 Brendon stepped down from his Director role to take up the newly created and highly strategic position of Product Owner. SMX’s products and IP now span sophisticated email security applications, including content management and archiving, and hosted email. Brendon is responsible for the strategic definition and delivery of the SMX product roadmap. He also has a hands-on customer-facing role in terms of explaining the roadmap and capturing requirements.
Brendon has a background in software development and delivery, commercial management, business development and management in New Zealand and Australia. He is experienced in product development and delivery, strategic planning, financial management, commercial assessments, acquisitions, supply chain and procurement, and production management. Brendon joined SMX from vWorkApp, a Mobile Workforce Management Software development company that he co-founded, where he held the dual roles of CEO and Product Manager. Prior to this Brendon worked for Omnilab Media Group, an Australasian media company, where he held the dual roles of Group Commercial Manager in Australia and General Manager for Omnilab NZ; Commercial Manager – Sales and Marketing at Air New Zealand; New Business Manager – Business Development at Television New Zealand; and as a Logistics Officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Brendon holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Graduate Diploma in Business from the University of Auckland, and a Graduate Diploma of Public Sector Management from Massey University. He is also a graduate of the Senior Executive Supply Chain and Logistics Development Programme at Monash University, Melbourne.

David Frazer

Vice President Business Development
David Frazer

David Frazer joined SMX in February 2017 as Vice President of Business Development. In this role, David’s specific focus is on new business opportunities for SMX in the Australian, North American and other international markets. David brings a wealth of experience to SMX. He has built his 25+ year career in IT working in Europe, the United States and New Zealand, and has held senior leadership roles for the last fifteen years. David’s specialties are in leading teams and company growth in Internet Security, eHealth and IT applications strategies through Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). He has been responsible for developing and delivering many highly complex commercial software solutions in both local and global environments.

David started his career in the UK before moving to New Zealand for a technical management role with accounting software provider Solution 6. He followed that up with a role at consultancy company TechTonics, before moving to F-Secure, the global provider of SaaS for Internet Security and User Generated Content Applications, where he became Regional Vice-President, Technology based in Silicon Valley.
